| C.C. Myers, Inc Proposes New I-5 Construction Schedule |
 |
| Date Posted : 03/17/2008 |
 |
|
Sacramento's I-5
project
contractor, C.C. Myers, Inc. has proposed a dramatically faster
construction
schedule for the repairs that will take place over the summer.
"We think this is a
smarter,
safer and in some ways, easier way to complete the I-5 repairs and
rebuilding. The
key for us, was getting Caltrans and city leaders on board, and I must
say, we've
all worked together to make this happen," said contractor C.C. Myers.
"Our company likes to
think
outside the box and I especially enjoy the re-design process. What we
have now,
is a plan that disrupts traffic for a much shorter time than we
originally
thought and still allows the public access to downtown Sacramento and
Old
Sacramento."
Caltrans awarded the
I-5 project
to C.C. Myers, Inc. on February 8, 2008.
The company's winning bid included a 114-day construction
schedule at a
cost of $27M. Caltrans had estimated the
project taking 305 days to complete at a cost of more than $44M. C.C. Myers, Inc.'s proposed repair plan now
reduces
the impact to traffic to approximately six weeks, beginning after the
Memorial
Day holiday. Final approval of this construction plan by Caltrans is
pending,
but support has already been given by the cities of Sacramento and West
Sacramento.
The Rancho
Cordova-based highway
and bridge building company has completed 17 emergency projects for the
State
of California, including the repair of the MacArthur Maze in May of
2007. Last
week C.C. Myers, Inc. was honored with the national AGC/Aon Build
America 2008
Grand Award for that project. Over the recent Labor Day weekend, C.C.
Myers,
Inc. replaced a section of the Bay Bridge near the Yerba Buena tunnel
by
rolling in a new 350-foot bridge section. Early this year, contractor
C.C.
Myers was named one of ENR's Top 25 Newsmakers of the Year.
Updates on traffic
restrictions
during construction can be found at www.fixI-5.com
or travelers can call 511 during morning and afternoon commute hours.

C.C.
Myers, Inc. Awarded Downtown Sacramento I-5 Project
This
morning Rancho Cordova
based contractor C.C. Myers, Inc. was awarded the Caltrans contract to
repair
and rebuild a critical section of I-5 through downtown Sacramento. This
project
involves digging out portions of the existing freeway roadbed and
installing
new drainage, wells, and concrete roadway. To complete the work
portions of the
freeway and some downtown on and off ramps will be closed for periods
of time.
Caltrans
engineers estimated
this project would cost $45M and take 305 working days to complete.
C.C. Myers,
Inc.'s winning bid came in just under $27M with a 114 day timetable.
"This
is an ideal project
for us, and I feel great about working in partnership with Caltrans
again. I really
wanted this job for the people of Sacramento. This is the biggest
project we've
done in Sacramento, and it's great to be able to do good work where we
live."
This
contract provides a
bonus of $3.1M for meeting time and completion goals ahead of schedule.
Likewise, there are penalties for work not completed within the
Caltrans
timetable.
C.C.
Myers, Inc., in
partnership with Caltrans, repaired the MacArthur Maze in May of 2007
in just
17 days, opening the damaged section of freeway 32 days ahead of
schedule. Over
Labor Day weekend 2007, C.C. Myers, Inc. completed the
first-of-its-kind
roll-in of a replacement section of the Bay Bridge, re-opening the
bridge to
commuters 11 hours ahead of schedule.

Gov. Schwarzenegger Announces MacArthur Maze to be Repaired, Reopened on Friday
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced that the repairs to the MacArthur Maze will be completed Thursday night and the freeway will reopen for the Friday morning commute.
"Thanks to hard, around-the-clock work of Caltrans and C.C. Myers, our local partners and businesses, Bay Area motorists can once again travel through this busy interchange," said Gov. Schwarzenegger. "Just in time for the holiday weekend, this roadway will be open in 26 days from when the accident occurred."
At 3:42 a.m. on Sunday, April 29, a gasoline tanker traveling on westbound 80 to southbound 880 toward San Jose overturned and caught fire. The intense heat caused the steel frame of the freeway to soften, and the eastbound 580 connector above collapsed onto the 880 connector, closing two major arterials in the interchange.
The Governor issued an emergency declaration on April 29 in order to begin immediate repair and replacement of the interchange in Emeryville. This declaration streamlined public contracting and permitting codes and provided emergency funding to allow repair operations to begin immediately. The emergency declaration also authorized funding to provide free transit services in the Bay Area for Monday, April 30.
The Governor toured the site that Sunday and thanked the California Highway Patrol, Caltrans, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and local elected leaders for their immediate response to the closure. He also thanked the Red Cross and Salvation Army for their emergency response support and food provisions to workers in the field.
Cleveland Wrecking Company began immediately to demolish the damaged section of freeway, and with the help of ACC-West Coast the southbound 880 re-opened on May 7.
Working very closely and cooperatively, Caltrans and the contractor, C.C. Myers, steel suppliers from Pennsylvania and Texas, fabricators in Arizona and Tracy, California, have worked around the clock, seven days a week to rebuild this section of freeway and restore mobility for Bay Area motorists.
"I am tremendously proud of CalTrans Director Will Kempton and the whole CalTrans team. They proved that in an emergency, this agency can get the job done. I also want to thank the people of West Oakland for their patience and support during this difficult process," said Gov. Schwarzenegger.
