West El Camino Avenue Bridge Project Completed
Date Posted : 1/13/2009
"With enthusiasm from Sacramento's new mayor, Kevin Johnson, and a spirited crowd joining the ceremony on the nearby levee, the City of Sacramento reopened the new West El Camino Avenue Bridge this morning. The new, concrete structure replaced the only remaining timber bridge in the city, which had been built in 1945.

"This is a proud day for the city," said Jerry Way, Director of Transportation, City of Sacramento, noting that the new bridge is a safer, all-purpose structure.
Contractor C.C. Myers, along with C.C. Myers, Inc.'s Project Manager, Howard Zabell, Engineer, Hillary Karbo and Superintendent, Ron Sousa were acknowledged for their successful, on-time completion of the project in 160 work days.
"This is a symbol and project that the whole community can be proud of," commented Mayor Kevin Johnson. "This was a team effort and C.C. Myers, your leadership is so important. We are so proud to claim you here in Sacramento."
"This is the best little bridge," added Sacramento Councilmember Ray Tretheway. "C.C. Myers did the Big Fix (on I-5) but this is our Little Fix!"
During the 6-month effort, construction crews:
*removed 15 truckloads of the original wood timbers
*poured 2500 cubic yards of new concrete
*added 24 recessed areas under the bridge for bat housing
*added vertical clearance and four flood walls for flood protection
*installed ornamental lighting and a commemorative plaque at the west end
The project was 80% federally funded.
