Nestled in a valley east of the San Francisco Bay at the foot of Mount Diablo, lies the intersection of two major freeway routes, Interstate 680 and State Route 24. Surrounding this interchange is the bustling city of Walnut Creek. Here is the challenge: build a new freeway interchange while simultaneously removing the 1960s version that is operating at over 400% capacity while causing no disruption to traffic or the community.
Through superior management and coordination of over 30 subcontractors, C.C. Myers, Inc. successfully completed the task. Twelve new freeway bridges and over seven miles of new asphalt concrete roadways were constructed. Structures that elevated up to 90 feet above the heart of the interchange were founded on drilled shafts over 10 feet in diameter and 70 feet deep. Ten existing freeway bridges were demolished, including the widely unpopular temporary viaduct constructed only a few years prior.
