The Bay Bridge Detour Tie-In 'Roll-Out/Roll-In' performed over the 2009 Labor Day weekend saw an existing section of truss bridge rolled out and replaced with a new 300 foot section. This massive retrofit project, part of a long-planned seismic upgrade by the California Department of Transportation, occurred exactly two years after a section of roadway was rolled-in just east of the tunnel over Yerba Buena Island on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, the SFOBB Roll-In Labor Day 2007 project.

CLOSED: Thursday 9/3/2009 8:00 p.m. --- REOPENED: Tuesday 9/8/2009 6:38 a.m.

The movement of two sections of bridge 150 feet in the air at a combined weight of nearly 7,000 tons embodies a very unique and complex heavy-engineering undertaking. The unprecendented effort was performed to create a one-half mile connection between the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and a Temporary Bypass Structure tying into Yerba Buena Island.

Cutting through a 300-foot double-deck section of steel structure was the most challenging phase of the weekend project. Once the section was successfully severed, a technologically-advanced hydraulic jack and track skidding system guided the 3200-ton segment out of the way. A newly-constructed, 300-foot, 3600-ton, double-deck section required precise engineering to roll it into the vacated space in order to match the deck elevations of the abutting structures; the target goal was achieved to within one-half inch of its mark.

We thank the following for their involvement for which the success of the project could not have been accomplished.
