ECHO SUMMIT REOPENED AHEAD OF SCHEDULE Closed the evening of 5/11/11 - Reopened at noon 5/21/11
Following an accelerated ten day full closure schedule, further complicated by fog, hail, and snow, construction of a new barrier on Highway 50 at Echo Summit repaced the deteriorating rock masonry wall. The new barrier, located on Upper Meyers Grade, mimics the original wall to preserve its visual characteristics.
The wall, built circa 1939, is surrounded by steep cut slopes and abrupt drop offs in a scenic area 7000 feet above the Lake Tahoe Basin. Replacement was performed to improve safety; the existing rock masonry had deteriorated to the point it was a concern for the traveling public, and it did not meet current State and Federal safety standards. Natural activity on this stretch of road - falling rocks and weather - as well as interaction with snow removal equipment and wayward vehicles, increased the need for this improvement.
1300 linear feet of concrete barrier slab, asphalt-concrete overlay, and storm drain improvements were also made, and new weather station equipment installed.
